Bulk Data Export for Translation
Learning objectives
- Quickly export untranslated content from the advanced search,
- Understand how to work with a translation file (structure, format, source and target languages),
- Master the steps to import a translation file to enrich product sheets in bulk.
Overview
In this course, we’ll see how to perform quick exports of data to be translated from the advanced search.
Files generated from quick data exports can be updated and reimported to translate product sheets in bulk.
Good to know
- The following actions are only available when:
the user has the necessary permissionsAND
- objects have been selected (via checkboxes or using “select all results”).
Only attributes with missing data are exported in the translation content export file. Attributes for which translation data already exists are not exported.
Translation export limitations
It is possible to export up to 5000 items to be translated via the advanced search.
Export data to be translated
Select product sheets to translate
- First, from the advanced search page, perform a search on a selection of product sheets (see the advanced search course),
- Then, select the objects you want to export by clicking their checkboxes,
- Finally, click the Actions button and from the dropdown menu choose Export results,

- A dialog box allows you to configure the export of selected objects. Depending on the configured Object Type, the export offers up to three options for the Export Type.

Good to know
This feature is only active when the user has selected objects via checkboxes.
Generate a translation export file
- Choose the Translation export type to export the textual content of the selected product sheets or variants, in an Excel file for translation,
- Once selected, additional options appear to define your export,

Select the following information:
Information | Description |
---|---|
File format | Excel |
Content to export for translation | Texts & predefined values, Texts only, Predefined values only |
Source language | Specifies the language from which content should be translated. |
Target language | Specifies the language into which content should be translated. |
Once the dialog box is configured, click the Export button to generate the translation export file.
The generated export file contains one column with text content in the Source language and an empty column for the translation in the Target language.
Good to know
- Exporting predefined values allows you to translate labels for attributes of type single or multiple selection. Even though the value remains the same across all data languages, these attributes are localized: their labels can therefore be translated in each language.
- Quick data export enables translation from one source language into a single target language. If you need to translate into multiple data languages, you’ll have to generate one export file per target language.
Download the translation export file
- Go to the translation data flows via the Data flows / Translation menu

- Download the previously generated file from the Translation file exports section

Good to know
You can also retrieve the translation export file directly from your notification center.
Import a translation export file
The Translation import section displays the list of translation export files that have previously been imported into the PIM.

The list includes the following columns:
Column | Description |
---|---|
Target language | The language into which the data has been translated. |
Status | The import status. |
Request date | The import date. |
Start a translation import
- To import a file, click the Browse button to upload the file from your computer.

- Once the file is selected, click the Upload button

The file will then be displayed in the Translation Import section and the translated attributes will be automatically populated in the product sheets.
Automatically translate data in an external tool
To bulk translate content using an external tool, here’s a method for reference, using Google Sheets and Google Translate’s automatic translation service. This method is provided for informational purposes. Quable is not responsible for the functionality or updates of any third-party tools mentioned.
Prerequisites:
- Exported a translation file from your PIM,
- Access to Google Sheets via a Google account.
-
Open Google Sheets and import your translation export file.
-
In your spreadsheet:
- In cell C1: the source language code (e.g.,
fr_fr
for French from France). - In cell D1: the target language code (e.g.,
en_gb
for British English). - Column C contains the text to be translated.
- Column D will contain the translations.
- In cell C1: the source language code (e.g.,
-
In cell D3, paste the following formula:
=GOOGLETRANSLATE(C3;C$1;D$1)
-
Drag cell D3 down the column to apply the formula to all rows.
-
Once the translations are generated:
- Select column D,
- Copy it,
- Then use Paste special → Values only to replace the formulas with the translated text.
-
Download the file in Excel (.xlsx) format.
-
Import this file into your PIM via the data flow system, as described in the previous section.
Good to know
Once the file is imported, the translations are automatically applied to the product sheets in the relevant data languages. No further action is required!
Summary
- Quick translation exports include only untranslated attributes,
- The quick export is done from the advanced search on a selection of product sheets,
- Each quick export file allows translation into a single target language,
- Translation import is done via the Data Flows > Translation module,
- Google Sheets can be used for large-scale automatic translations
